My career
- In 2000 I was appointed as the first Director of the Disability Rights Commission in Wales. I have built and led a successful team with a track record of promoting disability rights in Wales, securing support from the public and private sectors.
- I have led the DRC's work on transport across Great Britain, helping to secure the removal of the transport exemption from the Disability Discrimination Act, delivering a Code of Practice and a series of six guides to the resultant duties for transport operators. Just before the close of the DRC I organised an innovative campaign to encourage young disabled people to try public transport.
- In 1996 I established Bristol Regeneration Partnership, a cross-sector partnership managing the Single Regeneration Budget in Bristol. The BRP secured funds in all rounds of bidding and by the time I left I was managing over £6M per annum.
- I restructured Barton Hill Settlement, a multi-purpose community centre delivering services to everyone from six months to over 90 in a disadvantaged community in Bristol. I doubled the turnover and empowered the community in a way that helped Barton Hill secure £10M regeneration funding.
- I set up Chesterfield and North East Derbyshire Council for Voluntary Services, an organisation which still thrives after 20 years.
- In 1986 I was the first Chair of the campaign group which became known as 'Rights Now', which ultimately succeeded in securing the passage of the Disability Discrimination Act 1995
